Tech is the engine that drives every interaction at Swoop, with both internal and external customers. We have a bespoke CRM that does a good job of serving the needs of our sales, operations and marketing teams. This is combined with three websites (and CMS), and a bespoke customer review platform. Our current stack is as follows:
MySQL / MariaDB is used as a database server, all running on Linux servers.
The logical architecture is simple: two monolithic web applications, each connecting to a MySQL database.
Bash scripts for server utility/operations tools.
We use Git for version control and work using an agile workflow.
Going forward it is our intention to build a stack that integrates:
Migrating our core CRM (including messaging platform and customer feedback) to a Laravel framework using React for front-end components; integrating third party apps where sensible (e.g. Mailchimp, Typeform).
New applications and functionality to be developed and managed in-house.
Mobile is a very big part of our future vision with a plan to provide our customers with an installable mobile app, either fully native or PWA, to enhance their travel experience.
In addition we are constantly improving the platform and optimising performance.
What you’ll be doing
We are looking for a developer to join our team on a permanent basis, reporting to Duncan Porter, our Lead Developer. We are considering a range of experience and skills for the role to enhance our current team of full stack developers. You do not have to be full stack and we welcome applications from any developer who feels their skill set can help us deliver incredible applications for our customers and internal teams. At Swoop, we architect roles to individuals; your role will evolve over time and as opportunities are identified.
Who you’ll be
In return we can offer
In return we can offer a competitive salary based on your experience, 25 days of holiday, plus your birthday, and bank holidays. A relaxed workspace for projects, and the best views in Bristol at our HQ. We’ll provide you with a fast and capable development laptop to work on. We run Mac and Linux. You’ll have significant input to the product development roadmap and influence over how solutions are engineered. Coaching from day one, particularly around working with multi-disciplined teams and other stakeholders. You’ll have the opportunity to spend 1-2 days per year participating in local Tech Conferences on behalf of the company. We regularly host ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions with both internal and external speakers. Last, but not least the pride that will naturally come from building the engine that lies behind thousands of extraordinary experiences at the ends of the earth!
How to apply
Please send your CV and a one-page response to these questions to email@example.com
What has been the application/feature/product that you are most proud of developing and why?
What has been your biggest or most memorable achievement outside of work?
We are in the early stages of an exciting journey to become an innovative leader in sustainability in travel. We want to shape our business in line with the global sustainability challenges, to tackle the negative impact of our being in business, and to explore ways in which we can have a positive impact on our customers, the destinations in which we operate, the industry, and the wider debate around sustainability and travel.
We are now looking for an in-house Sustainability Manager to drive the sustainability programme - initially on a 6 month contract but with a view to it becoming a permanent role.
What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Manager Director and with support from the company’s Sustainability Advisor, you’ll be responsible for the Sustainability Plan: its development (in support of the Sustainability objectives), delivery and measurement.
You’ll shape the sustainability projects themselves, ensuring they are robust, innovative, commercially-minded and true to the principles of sustainable development. And you’ll find ways of delivering them in an entrepreneurial way, with support from the internal team and external experts where needed. You’ll play a key role in the sustainability strategy, and in proposing and deciding the projects that will support it. You will ensure they are not only aligned with the broader business goals, but carefully measured and monitored to ensure they’re delivering maximum impact.
You’ll be the internal sustainability champion, supporting, challenging and engaging the business in driving the change it seeks, and ensuring all its activities and messaging support the ambitions to be a leader.
You’ll be a sustainability spokesperson and advocate for the business, supporting the raising of the profile of the sustainability efforts of the business, among peers, the wider industry and partners.
Who you’ll be
You are passionate about sustainability and have a powerful drive to play a positive role in shaping a better world. You have solid experience of driving sustainability programmes in a commercial (ideally SME / entrepreneurial) context, and of contributing to strategic planning. You will be a self-starter, happy to operate without close management, willing to roll up sleeves to ‘get stuff done’ and comfortable with collaborating with and challenging team members at all levels. You are confident in being an external voice for the business, and have the maturity and gravitas to command respect from key stakeholders.
You have strong networks in the world of sustainability (and, ideally, travel) and know how to orchestrate resources - internal and external - to get things done.
You can move at speed, and have a predisposition to go with ‘good enough’, while always maintaining the longer view. Your approach to sustainability is entrepreneurial: challenging received wisdoms; testing and learning; innovating; drawing upon emergent thinking and research.
It is second nature to craft and deliver an annual programme of work, and to juggle the demands of several threads running concurrently.
In return we can offer
In return, we offer a 6 month fixed term contract, part time (3 days a week) with a competitive salary, 25 days holiday pro rata, plus your birthday off. To top it all off, our office has some of the best views of Bristol. Seriously, we don't call it "The Condors' 'Nest' for nothing!
How to apply
If you think this sounds like the perfect role for you, send a copy of your CV and a one-page cover letter with your thoughts on how a travel company whose current model involves carbon-intensive flights and cruises to far corners of the Earth can be a positive thing in a world facing climate crisis to firstname.lastname@example.org. No detailed plans required, just some thoughts.
